mn, I guess it depends what year a trim level mazda you've driven. I don't know how long they've been doing it, but a 6 speed manual is an option. At any rate, many cars still only come with 5 speed manuals, such as the Mitsubishi Evolution X - and that's a real sports car.
Of course, you won't hear me complain about an RX-7.. I love them, and constantly consider getting a 2nd generation turbo model.
