Lot of times, oil leaks simply come from loose oil pans, and valve covers. Many owners manuals actually recommend tightening them from time to time.
$1500 sounds like an insanely large sum for a head gasket on a corolla. Also, the dealers tend to charge more than other shops.
If your car isn't smoking like crazy from the exhaust, and/or there isn't coolant in your oil (get all white and gooey), then it's not likely that you have a blown head gasket.
