I only used Piper as a companion to get her perk. I think it was Speech or Charisma something something. Actually, that was the deal with all the companions. Once I got their perks, I parked them at Red Rocket. They're too irritating to run around with.
Cait was sort of cool. I kept trying to give her baseball bats, but she kept picking up guns. The only companion who would reliably use melee weapons was Curie. I never picked up Strong, so I don't know what he does.
Anyway, I imagine FO4 does become a reasonably good shooter with judicious modding. It's already fair if you lean toward rifle/sniper characters. If I were to restart the game, I would just repeat my present character but leave out the Bloody Mess perk.
