Blizzard actually made templars useful in sp adventure mode through the use of a simple ring. If both you and the templar have a copy of the ring (plus a certain amulet doodad for the templar that makes him invulnerable), you "share" damage, giving you a constant 50% damage reduction. This obviously won't work with co-op, but it becomes almost required in high-level sp rifts.
