Subject: RE: Why throw chip at RTX 2070?

I replaced a 760gtx with a 2060 in Jan 2019. I have an i5-4440 (read: 4th gen old) so even at 1440p, many of the games I currently play are now cpu/mainboard throughput bound. The GPU often runs at 50%.

For games that more properly live on the GPU the performance and GPU usage is better. Division 2 is CPU bound; DOOM runs off the card basically.

Ray tracing differences are very subtle, but it seems to me that e.g. Metro exodus are still using SSAO even with ray tracing enabled. SSAO has always been a massive frame hit and it shouldn't be needed with RT, so I assume they have a bubble of ray tracing and then fallback to SSAO. Presumably this is less of a hit than pure RT.

Anyhow, ray tracing in real time should be more of a thing and an extra 30$ over a non ray tracing card for the lulz might nudge more games into using it.
