RE: WAU! What a terrorific audience
Well then stop burning so many calories playing DDR. Orrr... Win money from DDR competitions and pay bills? There's no winning, is there? But I feel ya. I got laid off last month after being on furlough for the previous few months. However, I did just get back from an out of state interview for a job that's barely good enough. Meh.
SOMA had me thinking more about the relevance of puzzles in what otherwise aren't puzzle games. In some, it's completely pointless (I vaguely recall switch puzzles in Shadow Warrior), and maybe that can be argued across the board, although simply clicking on a "terminal" or hitting a switch lacks immersion, which is certainly ok for many games. After all, most puzzles (or worse: mini-games) don't feel realistic when it comes to accomplishing the task at hand anyway. SOMA did an ok-ish job and every puzzle was at least unique, but they were all simple and based on superficial impressions of various technologies. Granted, realism isn't particularly fun either. Still, it would have been ridiculous to not have puzzles while maintaining the bits like "turn wheel with stupid mouse motions to drop ladder. Also, don't look at monster behind you", but I suppose the reason for those was to cause a bit of additional tension rather than immersion.
The problem with Stories Untold in ep2 & 3 was definitely the puzzle repetition with only minor variations in steps. It just turns into tedium, like washing a sink full of dishes. The last episode tied them all together but it wasn't particularly rewarding. Maybe it's just me being jaded.
