of course not sure how gen 1 electric, manually controlled elevators operated, which were probably from around somewhere near 1910.
of course speed was likely governed by a sort of "gearing" through pullies, but the control of the unit was free, meaning anyone could decapitate you

but also, the speed of the elevator..
surely there were upscale business type buildings in new york which would have demanded speed. not sure if ever fast enough to truly be leathal from a brute impact to the ground, which would only need to be somewhere around 25mph, but surely the added speed would make decapitating someone much easier
