I don't know anything about Dayton speakers. I would suspect they're trash, but I could be wrong. But if the price of the speaker is cheap, they are probably junk. I would stay away from powered speakers, since you sacrifice quality for convenience, and you're basically stuck with them.
A lot of it depends on how large your listening area is and what you want to listen to. If it's just a smaller room like an office or a bedroom I wouldn't get a subwoofer. Most subwoofers are only good for nig bass. All it will do is make loose items rattle and drown out sounds you want to hear.
If it's just a small room, you can get plenty of sound from a smaller amplifier. Lepai used to make a really cheap tripath amp that was pretty good. The adapter for it was underpowered, so if you swapped it out with a similar one for an lcd monitor, you could get an amp with decent sound and power for around $30 (amp + power adapter). The Lepai amp linked in that reddit thread looks exactly like it, but that is a newer version that doesn't have the tripath chipset. That thing is a piece of shit. You can google this stuff though and you might still be able to find something good and cheap for sale somewhere.
Speakers are a little tougher though. For all your speakers, you ideally want something that covers as much frequency range as possible and has a relatively flat frequency response. Typical bookshelf speakers will have a mid and and a tweeter, but you can find a few 3 way bookshelf speakers that you'll get a fuller sound from.

You could also build your own speakers. You tend to see broader options with car audio, since you can find different ranged speakers easier, and a few companies even make 5-way speakers. I wouldn't recommend getting those unless you want to experiment though.
Anyways, Black Friday/Cyber Monday is less than a month away, so just wait for that. Right now is the worst time to buy anything.
