Sim's advice is probably the truest I've heard in a while.

Regarding the adverse effects of a crossover, well, everything in the signal chain will negatively affect the sound to some extent or another, but in reality, you're way better with it than without. Even the fanciest speakers on the planet have them, unless they're bi/tri/etc-amped, but in those cases they have some other active filtering. Maybe even in the digital domain.

Point is, with common 2-way speakers (woofer + tweeter), they'll either have a proper crossover of sorts, or on the low end, a simple capacitor-based high-pass filter on the tweeter and nothing on the woofer. That said, a $50 two way pair of speakers with a simple filter will probably sound way better than a $20 pair of speakers that have nothing but a 2.5" speaker in them.

I almost got a pair of edifers. While I'm satisfied with what I have, I would have probably been satisfied with them too. You probably would be too, but I think the only versions with a sub out are like the 1850s or whatever. You could probably find some decent powered monitors in your price range too if you're going to use your computer's sound card.
