An external DAC is not going to be any better than the DAC on your computer. Unless you have a really nice soundcard with socketed op-amps, then you'd at least be able to somewhat customize your DAC.
If your budget really is something like $300, then I would get something like this:
Amplifier
speakers
That amp has a subwoofer out, plus digital in and plenty of power for the bookshelf speakers. There's also a headphone port on that amp, so if you ever get nice headphones that need power, you'd have it. The digital in is probably not any better than the DAC on your phone or any other random device, so that's more of a convenience than anything else.
Although, after using a hybrid tube amp for a while, I really like the sound so that's why I would go with it. You could probably find a normal solid state amp with those features, but you'd still need to spend at least $100 if you didn't want a pile of junk.
