RE: Had to buy new tubes for desk amp...
I had a cheap Presonus recording interface, and all my listening was through a pair of Sony HDR-7506 headphones, which are fairly decent. After that interface died, I just plugged them into my mobo soundcard, which ended up sounding slightly better to me. Then I listened to a song through my new system, which I've heard numerous times before. Some weird sound caught my ear which had me thinking something was fucked up, just to realize it was the snares resonating with some piano chords which obviously must have always been in the recording. I just never noticed it before. So even though my DAC+AMP isn't considered Hi-Fi by the manufacturer, either the DAC or following analog section (or maybe both) is quite a bit better than my other stuff.
Now a days, really good sounding DACs and amps can be had for pretty cheap, whereas comparable speakers would cost quite a bit more. That said, cheapish modern speakers are quite a bit better than equivalently priced speakers of several generations ago.
I've heard mixed things about those Sony bookshelf speakers, but then again, that's the case with all audio shit. I don't know if they would be fatiguing, but like, do you really need a 1" and a 3/4" tweeter? Though at $73 on Amazon right now, they may very well be worth it.
