I've had this tube amp for about 3 years or so now, so I think the one tube is just worn out. I haven't got the replacements yet since I just ordered this morning.
Sony is a decent middle quality brand and those speakers have free returns, so there's not much risk at least. I have a pair of Polk floor standing speakers I really like though, so you probably can't go wrong with Polk.
The biggest problem with a separate DAC is you can send encoded audio through a digital line. So if you're outputting Dolby 5.1, THX, or something else your typical DAC is not going to be able to decode it, so you'll just hear a bunch of loud static.
