If those Sony speakers were ~$70 when I was looking, I may have gone with them, but I'm happy with the Neumi, and won't return them despite still being within the return window. I've been listening to them all day after work since I've got them and find them detailed enough and pleasant to listen through at the volumes I use.
I don't think I'd spend $300 on passive bookshelf speakers. At that price, you can get something pretty good that's active, or something else on the used market. IIRC, I paid $400 a while back for my used Event 20/20BAS monitors. Like I said before, if you want theatre-like rumble you'll need big floor standing speakers or a sub, so factor that into your purchasing decision. But you might be surprised by the amount of bass even some 4" speakers can produce.
