I have a hybrid amp which is basically just a solid state amp with a tube preamp. A full tube amp might sound a little different.
There is a little hum when I first switch it on, but that goes away after a few minutes. I've done a comparison with a tripath amp I have and there is a layer of warmth the tubes add that enhances the audio a lot. I only wish this amp had a headphone out port. Keep in mind this is just my computer desk audio, so it doesn't get that loud. For something like home theater with more volume and power, I wouldn't use tubes.
Guitar amps are a little more difficult to compare since the speaker is usually part of that, but the tube guitar amps I've heard tend to sound a lot better.
