RE: Lots of people in my circle of friends
The incumbent does tend to have the benefit for presidential elections, but I think Trump was doomed before he even won his first election. I'm confident that the only reason he won 2016 was due to the assumption that he would lose so badly that there was no reason to bother with going out and voting. Remember, 10 million fewer voters in 2016 than 2012. This election? Record turnout. I'm not one bit surprised. If anyone thought he had a strong chance, then they're in too deep in the echo chambers.
Now why he won the primary back then is a whole different matter, and I have my theory on that too, and it's definitely not because he was the most realistically compelling and definitely not the most competent. Christ, just read the absurd number of leaks and stories from current and past cabinet members if you think the executive office under Trump was anything less than a raging dumpster fire.
It's not that Biden was the best Democrat candidate, but rather viewed as being experienced, and just as importantly, more moderate than many of the others. His nomination had nothing to do with any [non-existing] standout qualities, but more as being an anti-Trump vehicle. And now in the general election, a vote for him was primarily intended to be a vote against Trump. Trump's odds were pretty abysmal even if he could have stopped being an idiot for just a second (which he couldn't).
