Roman sculpting was just rewarmed Greek technique. Roman painters did do portraits (see the frescos at Pompeii), but they're closer to Byzantine art than Renaissance realism. Why the painters couldn't (or chose not to) match the sculptors puzzles me, too. One argument is that it was a style, since the odd anatomical proportions appear in most Roman painting. They also seemed to have problems with perspective (see some of the weird gladiatorial art for examples). I say "problems," but this too may have been a style or choice. I kind of doubt it because realistic perspective was almost certainly a Renaissance invention. I don't know, but for some reason I like Roman painting. The longer you look at it, the weirder it gets.
