A more relevant answer would be that the ancient Mediterranean world considered sculpture more serious than painting. I don't know this for sure, but I think it's reasonable to infer that sculpture was an effort to preserve or make permanent. Painting was more decorative. Think Don Giovanni vs. Sirius radio.
