oh you rotated the silicone pad? i dont believe you mentioned this before. im not sure what causes buttons to stop responding like this, as the circuitry which controllers everything is pretty much most dependant on a single IC and there is really not much more in between and these components are not likely to fail.
so the only other thing i can think of is perhaps a trace has become fractured from the years of use and maybe some flexing or pressure put onto the pcb.
but anyway, im curious as to what model of 3DS you have
