The PCB contacts are probably gold, or if it's stupid, carbon coated. Trying to do anything except clean it is hopeless, or temporary at best. Did you also clean the conductive pad on the button membrane? If it looks worn, then it's probably that. If the contacts on the PCB are gold, then I doubt it's that, especially since you said it works with hard button presses.
