Directly heated irons changed my soldering life for the better. Not only do they reach temperature in a matter of seconds, but they can maintain their temp well while heat is flowing into joints, which is the greatest benefit.
I was so close to pulling the trigger on a Pace ADS200 station, but I came to my senses and found a Chinese device that I've been extremely satisfied with (I chose it after seeing a teardown) for almost 1/10th of the price of the Pace. I then bought other goodies with the unspent cash.
Unrelated to that, I just got another bench power supply in the mail yesterday, but unlike my Xantrex, this is 2.5 channels. It's pretty incredible how poorly so much lab equipment holds its value.
