You can have a max of eight party members. I liked to have two of every class -- melee, ranged, combat mage, nature mage. I nearly always played a combat mage.
Boomer tip: The two nature mages do a good job of automatically healing everyone, provided you keep all eight party members selected at all times.
Yes, DS2 was a major improvement. Far less tedious.
