I guess what I'm saying is that the proper job of the gaming press is to gather useful information about games and related products, then present that information in an unbiased, accessible form. If that ever happened in the first place, it's long gone. Instead, the gaming "press" tries to include itself in the so-called industry. They become a marketing arm for publishers, unless they can find a scandal. A good scandal will generate enough clickbait hits to mitigate the temporary loss of publisher perks.
The losers are inevitably the audience. But frankly it's hard to find anything noble or even sympathetic about such an audience. Gamers and their press deserve each other.
