The quality is still out there, but you have to pay for it and usually there's a struggle to maintain a print form of the publication. It's not impossible to find decent writing on the web. Ars Technica is still good if you can sift through some of its political drivel. I mean the writing itself is still edited for the most part.
Editors make a huge difference, provided they're real editors and not simply site owners. Silly outfits like Eurogamer and Rock, Paper, Shotgun could be a good UK web publications if they had proper editors. Instead, they're just a crowd of inbred diary writers with inflated egos and too many face piercings.
