While ago, I was trying to think of the best formation, but then I realized how hopeless formations are in DS1. Even a circle-the-wagons thing with mages in the middle won't work. Ranged enemies make purely defensive stances impossible (and ranged attacks in this game HURT).
The best thing to do is save every fifteen seconds. Completely appropriate.
