Subject: RE: Bannerlord Report: Early Game Findings

Okay, I have a little time to talk about horses.

In M&B1 and Warband, cavalry magically obtained their own horses and gear. In Bannerlord, their salaries are still high, but the player has to provide their horses.

When you think about this, you realize that it effectively addresses the issue in earlier games that allowed the player to recruit Swadian villagers and rapidly grow them into OP knights. Why bother with learning tactics when all you had to do was maintain a bunch of cavalry and steamroll everybody? I imagine you can still do this, but it will cost you a lot more, and there may be other limitations I don't know about.

Also, the pathfinding skill does not exist in Bannerlord, or at least I can't find it. Scouting is very effective in terms of detecting other parties and tracking them, but you can no longer exploit pathfinding as a way to speed up the party. Instead, speed is dependent on horses -- how many people are riding them and how many you have in your inventory.

For better or worse, horses are now incredibly important, and you must budget accordingly.

Maybe I'm imagining things, but the riding mechanics seem to be improved, which is amazing when you consider that Warband probably had the best mounted effects of any game ever. I'm currently using a steppe war courser, and it's like riding a motorcycle. The speed and maneuverability are insanely good but still believable. I don't know how these guys can do this while other developers don't seem to be able to.

Anyway, horses = win but expensive.
