Nothing against Liv Tyler, but in the books Arwen Evenstar is seen only once at Rivendell. I don't think she ever speaks directly in a scene. She's more of an idea than an active character.
What I love about the books is that they describe a war that takes a long time to start in a world that has a vast geography and a complete history that stretches back thousands of years. Tolkien correctly disputed the proposition that the Rings trilogy was an allegory, but I think he was trying to show how something as complicated as World War II could creep up on people and how nothing but the greatest sacrifices could end it.
I think it's a 20th century masterpiece.
