RE: cowboys
It's hard for anyone born after about 1955 to understand that the heroes and role models of the 1940s/1950s were unalloyed good guys, and most were kiddy Western stars, e.g., William Boyd (Hopalong Cassidy), Roy Rogers, Gene Autrey, and so on. For the more adult crowd, there were actors like Randolph Scott. Big stars like James Stewart, Gary Cooper, et al. played more cynical, conflicted cowboys, but there was no doubt about their virtue. The anti-hero was still isolated to noir films.
