Subject: Doom 2016

I got it for about $5 on the Steam sale. It's fairly satisfactory so far.

At first I didn't like what seemed to be ammo and health deprivation, but once I accepted the fact that I would have to supply much of this by means of the chainsaw and glory kills, I saw the wisdom in this design. I now look forward to ripping demons' arms off and sawing them in two as resource mechanics. It's rather clever.

The game seems to be a more intentional remake of the 1993 original than Doom 3 was. Gameplay is faster, and the UAC levels are more faithful, even though they retain much of the darkness and gore of Doom 3. The enemies are more plentiful and out in the open instead of loaded on springs in monster closets. The guns sound wonderful and are fairly effective.

While I like some of the little bonuses and challenges, I think they should have been omitted. It's nice to get extra points for weapon upgrades, but most of the weapon point challenges are dumb. In one set, I was supposed to do two ridiculously easy tasks (find an automap, for example) and one idiotically hard one (glory kill two death knights with an overhead attack). The latter challenge is not all that hard if you can devote all your attention to it, but while you're trying to whittle down the hell knight's health, you're looking around for a perch so you can jump down on him. And then either he kills you or you fail the timing and accidentally kill him too early. And then you run out of hell knights and fail to get a bonus weapon point. And then you scream and cover your head with ashes, because that train has left the station and you can't go back.

It's this console crap that keeps Doom 2016 from being a really great game. Save points, silly challenge checklists, arenas -- all console brain rot. Very disappointing.

Still, you get sucked in because the combat is just so great, imo. Anyway, it's not bad for $5.

I also got Doom Eternal for $20. I've watched quite a few youtubes, and I must say it looks like good wholesome family fun. I may give 2016 a rest and start Eternal because who doesn't want Doom Guy to morph into Lara Croft?
