RE: Doom 2016
Ultrakill draws from many games- The interactive arsenal of Unreal Tournament 2004, the arena encounters of Painkiller, the style system of Devil May Cry 3+, the risk/reward health system of Doom 2016/Eternal, the movement of Titanfall 2. Unlike some games that borrow a bunch of mechanics and end up feeling aimless and generic, this one flows extremely well.
It looks graphically basic for sure, but I feel this simplicity ends up helping it in the long run to cut down on visual clutter, as this is one of those games that throws a load of visual cues at you that you need to pay attention to. The one knock I have against it is that it's in early access, and only the first chapter is available at the moment.
Funny you should mention Gloomwood, at some point my email got put on a "send these people beta keys to indie games" list and was wondering the other day if maybe I had one for it, the game does look fancy. I'm pretty sure Szymanski and co. put out a short demo of it on Steam that you could have a look at.
