RE: I did a thing
The efficiency of a hybrid (in city driving) comes primarily from power regeneration. Rather than dissipating all your kinetic energy as heat via brakes to slow down, you do work on a generator which charges batteries (or other means, but generally batteries), and then later use that electricity to power an electric motor for acceleration. It's the only recycling I do. That of course doesn't work on the highway except in stop and go traffic conditions. Only a gas engine with high thermal efficiency and a transmission with low losses helps there. In the case of my car, the gas engine is rated at a thermal efficiency of 40.9% which is allegedly the highest for a production vehicle. So ultimately it depends on your driving conditions. If the majority of your driving was done on the highway at speed, then an efficient dino juice burner with a manual transmission would be your best bet.
