Having a backlit Gameboy Pocket is pretty sweet
But its resulted in me having 3 different handhelds around my house that all get regularly picked up, which is retarded.
That said, I also replaced the batteries in a few game carts that I had for Gameboy and that was really damned easy, so now it's nice to be able to play Super Mario Land 2 or Donkey Kong directly on the native hardware. I'd like to pick-up Gradius, but it's expensive ($30ish) and I suck at Gradius, so I'm not sure how much play I'd get out of it.
But, it also turns out that there is something I hadn't considered: The Gameboy pocket, being 25 years old, just barely has the enough power to run the screen and not totally fuck itself. I can't run my Everdrive off it right now, because unless the batteries are totally fresh, it will not boot up a game due to power draw. Even with normal games, I sometimes experience weird issues (SML2 randomly rebooted on me last night), which I'm chalking up to lack of power. So, I have a new 5v voltage regulator coming today, which I'm hoping to get soldered in tonight; it's supposed to be isolated on its own and help draw a solid 5v from the batteries, versus the 2-3v normally going through the pocket. This is supposed to help with power draw and allow me to use my Everdrive and negate those weird issues.
I also learned through all this that I have to clean my soldering iron; I had no idea. Mine essentially stopped working and after researching a new one, I discovered they need regular cleaning during use or they effectively cease working.
