I have grown to somewhat dislike RPG shooters, in general. The mechanics tend to just be skill handicaps, and most developers just don't know or care to properly balance.
Doom eternal may not have cared for your feelings, but the skillset can be grasped and mastered pretty quickly. The game does not really open up until everything is unlocked though: the base game vs the DLCs is a pretty good example of how the grind is arbitrary.
Borderlands is a great example of bad gatekeeping: I don't think I was ever on par with the level of the areas I played in, and all the loot was always 2 levels above usable.
I just ran through torchlight 2 (free kthx epic) but that was the same thing, only I was perpetually 5 lvls below
