honestly, you are definitely right about grand hotel being a great film.
the movie itself is just fine, but what makes it special is that its joan crawfords only real film. pre code was definitely her golden moment. and grand hotel is the only real film she has ever done before they ruined the shit out of her face by turning her into gross anti sex shit.
most her pre code work is forgettable or low budget, and then post code is all mr. potato head.
so its really just grand hotel which she has ever shined in.
