RE: Identifying film noir
Everyone ended up calling any color noir film "neo noir" just to increase confusion. My favorite example being LA Confidential, in which neo noir is such a nebulous term, that it just means a movie with detectives who self monologue a lot.
I just lump everything under the "crime drama" umbrella to be quick about it, and leave the genre sublabels to the arthouse ponies.
