Subject: Rustoleum seems to work

In the past, I didn't have good results with Rustoleum. It seemed to etch or craze model styrene in strange, unacceptable ways. Very alarming.

But recently I watched a guy on youtube who very frequently paints car models with Rustoleum. He starts with their primer, then moves on to a color coat, and may go so far as to use their clearcoat (alternatively or additionally, he will use Pledge Floor Gloss). He's done this probably hundreds of times with no bad effects. So I thought there must be something wrong.

On my latest model, I wanted a certain color which was not available from anyone except Rustoleum. I decided to give it another try. As expected, the etching effect happened. I was about to strip the paint when I thought, "What if I let it dry for a few minutes and give it another coat? What have I got to lose?"

So I did, and it worked pretty well. It's not a beautiful lacquer finish with 2k clearcoat or anything, but it's reasonably acceptable -- the etching is gone, and orange peel is minimal.

I think what's been happening is that Rustoleum doesn't necessarily etch or eat styrene; instead, it highlights or foregrounds everything going on with how the plastic was injected. It's like some kind of x-ray or something. A second coat (or maybe even a third light one) smooths this out.

I'm happy about this because Rustoleum has a huge color range, and it's cheap. My only problem now is how to store all those big cans.
