im not sure exactly what they do

obviously they are sprayed onto tar and used as roofing shingles and sheets. but they dont seem to do anything significant other than that.
they provide good traction for people who are walking on them. but that is all.
yes they must also block uv light or something, but tar does this much better by itself. i ddnt think the stone protects the product itself from degrading. yes its an aggregate, an ingredient for the asphalt itself, of which asphalt would not exist without, but so what.
i suppose the specialization of the stone is obviously needed for the unique type of asphalt a roofing shingle is, where the aggregate is concentrated on the surface rather than simply mixed in at a gross proportion like the roads are. this must require the stone to be a certain density and shape for the type of asphalt used on roofs. but so what.
