I wasn't implying that B2 would have otherwise been considered a good game, it's just that it was inherently compared to a good game, which had the effect of making itself look even worse.
I can only vaguely understand the appeal of Half-Life, which I think primarily has to do with it having head crabs. Since B2 didn't have them, it was bound to be a shittier. If Unreal had cutscenes, coke machines and crowbars, it would have probably been considered the best game from that time period instead.
