Yes, most of Newman's westerns are terrible. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was trendy hippie trash when it came out and remains wildly overrated now. I rather like Hud, though to me it's no more a western than Cool Hand Luke, which I hated.

is a great western. Newman is good, but Richard Boone outclasses the whole cast.
Anyway, Newman as a rule did not make good westerns. He was best cast as a bitter, disillusioned young man, e.g., Brick in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and Anthony in The Young Philadelphians. His later modern things weren't of much count except The Verdict and The Color of Money.
