Now be careful. You must not confuse the trashy southern boss movies with trashy New England/Midwestern scandal ones. Peyton Place, naturally, is the best known example of this category, but you had some good precursors and wannabes -- Imitation of Life, Picnic, Some Came Running, etc. These were more ensemble-oriented with various threads of scandal exposing the compromised underside of charming postcard towns. The movie studios probably assumed that women would flock to see these things and breathlessly recommend them at their bridge and mahjong klatches.
