allan hale sr. is the father of the skipper from gilligans island, who is allan hale jr. i never knew this.

absolutely nothing like his father
not even close. i dont wish to criticize too harsly but really, jr. is a bit of a degenerate when compared to his father, and not really because of his role as the skipper, but if i were to compare roles, i would more closely relate him to the criminal blacksmith from "hang em high" (fantastic clint western by the way)

allan hale is really a legendary actor from the silent era and beyond. most his roles are supporting but his physical appearance and his personal character are top notch. perfect example of old world stock. something like a eastern european cousin of teddy roosevelt.
the combination of his personality and physical appearance is entirely impossible to replicate today, there is just nobody like him anymore. but personally he is definitely one of my favorite male actors.
his pairing with barbara stanwyk in "stella dallas" was definitely a treat. the movie itself is sufficiently entertaining and his actual role doesnt really stand out too much, but his presence alone is enough to bring me joy.
cool dude, now i have to find other movies hes been in... i wanted to research him earlier many months ago, but i completely forgot
