Yep, it stands up well over time. Somehow it never seems dated to me. Everybody in it is hitting on all cylinders all the time. Jackie Gleason is outstanding. Also, Piper Laurie and Myron McCormick (Charlie) are pitch perfect.
But Scott -- notice that he rarely does his rage thing, but he steals the movie anyway. Bert is quiet but he takes no prisoners.
If you haven't already, you need to see Anatomy of a Murder. Scott as the prosecuting attorney is almost Bert again but with different goals and layers. To me, this is his best performance. He's very nimble and predatory, seemingly invincible, but he makes one mistake. I won't spoil it. Give it a look when you have a chance.
