I think it leaves room for that possibility, but to me it's more likely that Remick's character never planned a murder. She probably thought her husband would simply beat up on Barney and then rough her up a bit, which is clearly how she got her thrills. She's very screwed up and hazardous. Stewart is probably glad to be shut of her.
