That's the point of Quill. The audience only knows him from what witnesses say, and it's not complete. If we knew all about him, we would make up our minds too easily. Stewart's character can't confidently make him the bad guy, so he goes with the irresistible impulse defense. Scott's character doesn't know that he's the father of one of his hostile witnesses. If he did, he wouldn't screw up and lose. Explaining Quill eases too much tension on the tightly wound plot. Ya know?
