For what it's worth, I didn't buy him as a retired army colonel in Scent of a Woman. He may get Ricky Roma the salesman, but he doesn't wash as a military type. He excels at playing lowlifes and gangsters but not anyone more "normal." This is why I don't get his ongoing attempts to do Shakespeare on stage. He may put his heart and soul into being Shylock or Richard III, but he comes off as Carlito and Don Mikey.
