But where would you park your mammoth while you stopped at an inn? You couldn't put it in a stable. It would eat the horses' hay and knock over lanterns and such.

Also, while not an apple to apple comparison, elephants were terrible disadvantages in real-life warfare. Only the most competent trainers and riders could use them for shock and awe, which was quite valuable admittedly. They might even manage to knock a few enemies down, but eventually they would get hurt or frightened and start trampling their own troops. Mammoths wouldn't be any better as mounts, unless you had a specific reason to use something hairier and dumber than an elephant.

Also, can't the player outrun mammoths? What is the benefit of riding around on a mammoth? Come to think of it, I've never seen the advantage of riding around on that silly Dark Brotherhood horse.
