He probably made a lot of low-rent things coming up. Even in the '30s, he couldn't help being in a few so-so ones because that's mostly what they made in the '30s. But he also made very good ones like Manhattan Melodrama and the Thin Man series. One of my favorite '40s movies is Life with Father, which seems like quite a departure from his usual style.
