Back to the Esther part.
Wyler et al. went through a lot of actresses before picking Haya Harareet. Probably number one on the list was Grace Kelly. I would guess number two was Susan Hayward. No doubt Ava Gardner and Elizabeth Taylor were high up there, too, along with Deborah Kerr. All would have been hilariously inappropriate. Natalie Wood could have pulled it off, but she was a tad youngish-looking. I return to Kim Novak as a more or less workable choice if only for her ability to convey exoticism and mystery. But that wouldn't have been right for Esther.
Speaking of Kim Novak, see Bell, Book, and Candle if you haven't already done so. She's impressive in that.
