For about levels 1-50, a good way to increase damage is putting rubies in socketed weapons. At around level 50, you should be doing noticeable critical damage, so you should consider using emeralds in your weapons. Topazes should go in socketed armor pieces. If you really need more VIT, put an amethyst in a socketed helm.
