Around the time you start doing Torment rifts in Adventure mode, you'll probably find a Unity ring. At some point, you'll also start seeing tokens that prevent your followers from dying. If both you and your follower are wearing a Unity, and the follower has a cannot-die token, you'll only take half damage. In the Torment difficulties, this can be really useful, as monsters start hitting much harder and elites/champions start using multiple magic affixes.
