The new Dune
I saw this yesterday. I really, really liked it.
I confess that I haven't read the book, but one of the things I liked about the first movie was its slow, methodical pacing. It chewed 25 times on every little political and metaphysical morsel, which worked extremely well to convey the massive scope of the story. The new movie does the same thing, although I miss the old one's stream-of-consciousness narrative overlay, which leant a kind of dreamlike feel to everything.
The casting is very good with the possible exceptions of Timothée Chalamet as Paul and Josh Brolin as Gurney. Chalamet is a bit too girly and Brolin's style doesn't really work as well as Patrick Stewart's in the old movie. Everybody else is quite good, especially Rebecca Ferguson as Jessica and Sharon Duncan-Brewster as Dr. Liet-Kynes.
All the usual elements -- cinematography, music, etc. -- are beautifully executed. With the exception of occasional oddities, like the incongruous use of expressions like "okay" and "good to go," the writing is superb.
I just wish they hadn't split the thing into two parts. I know it's an epic, but this smells of Hobbit cash grab.
